Self-confidence through karate training!
Self-confidence through karate training!
We promote fitness and personal growth through traditional Uechi Ryu karate training in a family friendly, respectful environment.
At South Shore Karate, we keep our groups fairly small, but with plenty of class options in the schedule. This allows us to provide extra special attention to each of our students and it gives us great pride to be part of their karate journey. We love watching students grow up or grow older alongside us, as we all continue training our mind, body and spirit through karate.

All new students (must be 6 year or older) will be scheduled for a one-on one introductory session to assess their skill level, focus, and goals. The introductory lesson is free and there is no obligation to join. The purpose of this session is to give parents and students the opportunity to try some karate, meet the instructor and decide if we are a good fit. We then do our best to place the student in the best program available.

There are many mantras typically used in karate schools nationwide. One popular one is “Fall down seven times, get up eight.”
At South Shore Karate we have our own favorite mantra: “Dig Deep.” We even have it posted on the wall at the dojo. I can still hear my Sensei Jon Cierri telling me to “Dig Deep” when I was training as a white belt, or when I struggled physically or mentally during my martial arts journey. I now carry the mantra forward with our students to this day. It’s not unusual to hear our South Shore Karate students supporting each other with “You got this...Dig Deep!” It makes me smile every time I hear it.

She has competed in and won awards in Uechi Ryu and Tai Chi tournaments and was honored to be part of the 2004 Women’s Friendship Tour. This was an unprecedented trip in which 26 women Uechi Ryu practitioners from around the world traveled to Okinawa for two weeks of intensive karate training.
Denise has taught self-defense classes in medical and corporate settings, schools, neighborhoods, recreation centers and shelters. Her volunteer work with homeless and victimized women has helped her realize just how important it is to proactively teach students about assertiveness and boundary setting when faced with the encounters of everyday living.
In addition to teaching karate classes for all ages, Denise teaches “Home Alone, Staying Safe” and child safety programs throughout the South Shore of Massachusetts. Denise is committed to continuing education in martial arts, child safety, self-defense and fitness related training in order to bring a range of skills to her students.

A 10th degree Uechi Ryu black belt, Grand Master Sensei Jon has trained with many Okinawan Masters and has taught hundreds of students of all ages, feeling very blessed to watch the young and new students grow in their art.
Sensei Jon’s martial arts journey has been broad, from training in various systems, to teaching, to the tournament arena where he was a certified Karate Referee; he also was on the Board of Directors for the Karate Referees’ Association and ran the Massachusetts Open Karate Championships for ten years.
Sensei Jon takes self-defense very seriously and has taught all levels of protection, from the Boston Police Department Mobil Operations Patrol Unit to workplace violence for corporate personnel in various venues. For students within the community, he developed and implemented “Circles of Defense” for awareness and personal protection. He loves how the circular movements within the Uechi Ryu karate system translate into some simple and effective self-defense techniques. In addition to being the master instructor at South Shore Karate, Sensei Jon Cierri is currently a great–grandfather who continues to study Uechi Ryu karate and plans to do so for the rest of his life.
"I have been a student of Sensei Denise and Sensei Jon for about ten years, and I highly recommend studying at South Shore Karate with them. They helped me to develop confidence, compassion, respect, and many other qualities that still aid me in my life today. South Shore Karate is a fun and safe learning environment, and a fantastic place to study Uechi-Ryu Karate"
“We started at South Shore Karate when my son, my oldest, was in first grade. He was, and continues to be, a kid who loves to try new things but struggles with anxiety and perfection. Sensei Denise welcomed him with open arms. She has created a safe environment for him to learn, to work; to "dig deep" and to thrive. She has helped him realize that rewards come with hard work and the smile on his face after each achievement is the biggest gift for a parent. My daughter and I have joined my son as students of Sensei Denise. We all enjoy our class times, learning new skills, and learning our own strengths. Sensei Denise has a gift in seeing her students’ talents, where they can be encouraged and creating a safe environment to learn. She is an amazing teacher for all ages. We and the rest of the South Shore Karate community are truly lucky to have her."
Sensei Denise is a remarkable leader and coach who has created an atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement. She takes the time to get to know each of her students and inspires individuals. Both of our children have had amazing experiences at South Shore Karate. When schedules allowed, even Mom was taking a class! It was an amazing outlet, and Sensei Denise fostered the opportunity for our children to be the experts for their parents. Our youngest loves attending classes - she has previously been shy, but voluntarily goes first in her class where she is the youngest student. We would highly recommend any of the classes at South Shore Karate.”
I love how she mixes in fun with the learning.”
“Sensei Denise and her South Shore Karate dojo has been a haven of calm, confidence and personal exploration for my 3 kids and me as a mother (and karate student!) over the last 5 years. All 3 kids have experienced the love, guidance and training that Sensei has offered them, and the effects have been a strong passion for the sport, a personal goal driven orientation to achieve the next level in their pursuit, a compassion for the other students in their class to see them succeed, and a high level of self-confidence in themselves. Sensei somehow miraculously caters to each unique personality of my kids – our rule-following oldest son, our bold and feisty daughter and our wild child youngest son – and gets them to become their best self in the dojo. Every session there is more than just karate, but actual life lessons taught and shared, and in the end, Sensei is making them better people. This is the secret sauce of a wonderful Sensei and a safe, peaceful dojo.”
“It is difficult to quantify all the positive effects that Sensei Denise, Sensei Jon and her wonderful South Shore Karate dojo have had on my 13-year-old son. In 4 short years, I have seen not only his passion for karate grow exponentially, but also his confidence, determination, focus, situational awareness, and empathy. These attributes extend outside the dojo to his everyday life and make him a better person. Sensei Denise and Sensei Jon cultivate an environment that fosters growth of mind, body and spirit… what could be better than that?”
“I am so extremely happy we were introduced to South Shore Karate Sensei Denise. My two boys (age 6 and 9) take classes and they both LOVE it. Neither of my boys have shown much interest in sports which is fine with us, but we want them to get exercise and be involved in things with their peers. Karate is perfect for them. Sensei Denise is wonderful with them; she’s the perfect balance between firm and sensitive. She challenges them and lets them have fun. It is a wonderful environment that she has creatd; and I am so happy we found her! “
“South Shore Karate is where students are encouraged and supported in a journey toward becoming the best version of themselves. My son started with Sensei Denise in kindergarten, and she immediately made him feel seen. He sensed the dojo was a safe space to take risks and stretch himself. Now, as he is preparing for middle school, she continues to teach to his needs while building a community with peers. I would recommend South Shore Karate to anyone!”
“My son, who is normally a very fidgety noise maker, is so incredibly focused with Sensei Laiosa leading the class. I did not know that he had it in him! I will be forever grateful to Sensei for introducing me this side of my son. She has a quiet leadership that commands attention and respect with so few words spoken. I am in awe.”
